New Nursary Tank

New nursary tank improvised from compartment tank

material needed: 2mm thick plastic & silicon glue After 3 days of drying and washing planting begins

Mixed crypto, glossoSubstrate used river gravel at the bottom, ADA soil and Planza soil. Fertilisers used is pure laterite and root monster. CO2 supplied at 1bps, lights 8x36watts PL bulb,temperature 23-24 via chiller, using small canister filter. Tank size 4x1x1 feet.

Hey people! We will be having a club chalet on the 5th March to 8th March. There will be loads of activities going on and we hope that you will be able to come! There will be CCA Points for this event!

Please note that you do not need to pay for the chalet fee! However, please bring $10 for BBQ supplies and your own pocket money for your own use throughout the 4 days.

Do remember to bring your own clothes and necessities too.

Apistogramma sp. "Wilhelmi"

A new tank was set up in the clubhouse to accomodate a pair of wild Apistogramma couple.

Apistogramma sp. "Wilhelmi" characteristic purple chin.

Their natural habitat is in river with soft and acidic water, therefore blackwater extracts are added to the water, giving the water a yellowish cast.

When it was just added to the tank, the colour and purple chin was not as obvious.

This plant is known as Eriocaulon mato grosso or more commonly as Gu Jing.

DIY JOURNAL

January 2010 Issue

This issue is the continuation of the last DIY Journal on the DIY canister filter, below are the materials used and instructions:

ContainerSponge filter parts

Parts with plastic tube removed Marking on the cover
Cut hole
Fit in parts and give fast twist to fix it in position

Bubble tea straw cut to length

Fit into inlet tube

Make sure around 0.5cm gap between container bottom and straw to allow water flow

Seal up with silicon glue

Bottom view seal both sides

(Suggested: Partially loosen the tube to apply glue then fit it back allowing the glue to fill in the creaks between container cap and tube)

Cut up plastic cup removing top and bottom part using the mid portion

Apply glue and attach to bottom of container to create gap for water flow and support sponge

Water is drawn into filter via water pressure and is forced through filter media thus filtering it.

Air pumped into outlet is less dense than water and thus floats up carying water along with it. The pressure exterted by the air is expelled through the shortest route, which is the outlet. When pressure is expelled from outlet, inlet have less pressure thus creating flow.

Water lever in both inlet and outlet is the same; the air and air pressure naturally acts as an external force to allow the water at outlet to flow above the inlet

Tools used: a simple penknife, scissors, a saw can be also used instead of a penknife

SINGAPORE POLYTECHNIC
OPEN HOUSE 2010

Between 7th to 9th of January, SP Aquaculture club were showcased at the SP Open House. Throughout the 3 days, they were promoting the club and the way of aquaculturing to secondary school leaver and current SP Students. There are even free shrimps given to SP Students that signed up for the club during the open house.

A newly designed tank was moved to the booth to show students and visitors some of the activities that the club are doing.

Tank was also setup for visitor to catch fish with their bare hand.

This is not an easy task... without sufficient technique, the fish will just slip out of your hand.

Shrimps that were packed and prepared to be given out.

The aquaculture club logo sticker on the bag have instruction on how to take care of the shrimp.

Tiger and Bee shrimp that were given out were sponsered by Mr Sam.

AQUASCAPING

SCAPING THE SP MOBERLY TANK

On the 30th Dec 2009, A single group of aquaculture members has been selected to re-design the school's display tank located at the student R & R centre known as the moberly building. This is part of the club yearly project and till date the club has attempted 2 designs and this is the 3rd one.

In the process of design, they decided that the tank should be low maintenance this is partially due to low budget. However, with the help from supporters and sponsors. They have successfully made the entire aquascape a reality. The club would like to thank special thanks to Aquastar Pte Ltd for the infrastructure sponsorship and Mainland Tropical Fish Farm Pte Ltd for sponsorship of the Woods.

The DIY concept applies the Fundamentals of Physics learnt by the students during their course of studies. As this journal is published, more DIY canisters are being made to cater to their ever increasing tanks. The DIY canister filter is not only economical, it is also environmentally-friendly. Definitely a must-have for "Go Green" fans.

The procurement of higher grade CRS is justified with the better experience gained by the students from breeding the A Grade CRS.

BREEDING PROJECT IN PROGRESS

Aquaculture has successfully attempted to breed this species of tetra with a larger ratio of Male is to female. This adult Emperor Tetra was hatched and exhibited in a 4ft planted tank, it has been 9 months since his birth.

The Environment of our planted tank is maintain at optimum temperature or water parameter. Our tank temperature hovers around 22-24 Degree celsius. PH Level: Mild Acidic 6.4

Aquaculture has successfully bred a few generations of sakura shrimps. The colouration of our Sakura intensify even after few generations. Thanks to our project specialists who carefully select the best gene and seperate them. New batches of shrimps are also purchased to mix with the offsprings.

the completed CRS tank.first 5 compartments are planted with japanese hairgrass and the last 2 with glosso.A piece of coral chip or mineral rock is placed in each compartment for buffering Ph and increasing mineral content for the shrimps.Frog bits are used for temporary nutrient balancing till the hairgrass and glosso is fully grown.

CRS tank has been set up planting of japanese hairgrass is mostly done. Till date there are 2 compartments left to plant. Concurrently, water has been conditioned and tested with new CRS from fish shops some pictures

The CRS used for testing Bgrade have been alive and healthy for 3 days already shows no signs of stress whatsoever and eating well.

Well heres a new update! Our nuserary has some new additions to it. Recently cardinal tetras were introduced into the tank for water indication purposes and for beautifying the tank. A CO2 canister has also been installed which have greatly improved the condition of the tank. Plants are starting to bubble and look more green. Some pics =)

The long leaves belong to the narrow java which we recently aquired and trying to cultivate.

And a full view of the tank.As u can see the tank have been changed quite abit.The left side of the tank has been cleared to make space for downoi which hav been planted. The UG plant aka chendol or dragon claw plant has also fully established itself along with the japanese hairgrass.

The back of the tank is filled with low light plants like the narrow java and various other aquatic ferns along with moss like fissiden and mini pelia.

And last but not least..the completed CRS tank.first 5 compartments are planted with japanese hairgrass and the last 2 with glosso.A piece of coral chip or mineral rock is placed in each compartment for buffering Ph and increasing mineral content for the shrimps.Frog bits are used for temporary nutrient balancing till the hairgrass and glosso is fully grown.

Current specs of the tank...Ph 6.8 tempreature 24 degree celcius, NO2 none , NH3/4 none Crs C grade and B grade used for testing still alive and hav moulted.

We have bought 3 sulawesi shrimps for testing of the new tank...currently japanese hairgrass and downoi has also been added to the tank...frogbit is temporary used to help keep the tank in balance while the ground plants develope..here are some pictures =)

Not sure what type it is but it should be a six band black bee.. Currently they have been in the tank for 2 days+ and are still healthy

Tank Ph is still kept at 7.5+- tempreature 26 degrees celcius NO2 >0.3mg and NH3/4 >0.1mg..no food have been provided and they appear to be grazing on algae growing on the mineral rocks..More will be updated once we have more to say...bye

Currently trying to make a tank for Sulawesi Shrimps Tank includes river gravel for substrate , 2 pieces of rocks from sulawesi a normal rock and 2 pieces of wood.

The planned scape before water added

After removing everything and adding fertiliser for future planting put back everything and water added

Glosso was planted at the back

Tempreature was 26 degrees celsius

Ph and Gh have not been measured due to time constraints shrimp mineral powder and mineral rocks have been added to make the Ph high on the top left to bottom left would be filled with downoi and in the front japanese hairgrass. More updates will come when the water stabalises

HC(hemianthus callitrichoides) was take frm our lab to be planted into the tank today..some minor cleaning was done to it before planting..
The HC was planted in between the Japanese hairgrass as emerse form to prevent algae growth as the tank is still quite empty..

The wood was also tied with Nana and Java ferns and left to splatter to let them grow..once they hav rooted the HC should hav also rooted and then we will fill the tank with Downois at the back and finally tie chrismas moss to the wall and place it at the back.

The tank will be filled with water once the downois become stable and then Cuba would be planted ..This should take 2weeks or so..maintainance would be done frequently more updates will be up..

Currently our club is constructing a nusery for our plants it is gona be filled with purely with algae eaters and other fishes which would help keep the tank clean..other than that it would also be populated with sakura shrimps
